RCS Opera II

A duet of vocal excellence, our first two concerts showcase the young operatic talent of the Alexander Gibson Opera Studio. Over two weeks, hear every student perform a selection of arias from some of the most famous operas of all time.

ETHEROW REEDS

Manchester based clarinet quartet Etherow Reeds was formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2017. This exciting up-and-coming ensemble will perform a selection of music by composers such as Gershwin, Piazzolla, and Fran Griffin as well as Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy

KATHERINE BRYAN (flute) & ED COHEN (piano) - WORLD PREMIERE

At the age of 21, Katherine Bryan was appointed Principal Flute with the RSNO, a position she holds today in addition to appearing as concerto soloist with leading orchestras worldwide. Edward Cohen has established himself as one of the most versatile and in demand pianists in Scotland, and he collaborates regularly with leading musicians in major performance venues and festivals. Performing for the first time at Westbourne, they will perform The Lark Ascending as well as a brand new commission from our Composer-in-Residence Aileen Sweeney.

SOPHIE ROCKS (harp) - Shetland to Shanghai

In a first for Westbourne, we are delighted to present acclaimed harpist Sophie Rocks to perform her Shetland to Shanghai programme. This mixture of music for the harp and spoken word transports the audience on a journey around the world. Having received 4* reviews in the Scotsman, this innovative programme perfectly mixes some well known tunes arranged for harp, with some lesser known works. A must see.

JAMES GILCHRIST (tenor) & ANNA TILLBROOK (piano) - Schwanengesang

Firm favourites with Westbourne audiences, James and Anna return to conclude their cycle of Schubert. Having previously performed Winterreise and Die Schöne Müllerin to sold out audiences, we are delighted they have agreed to return to finish the set. Internationally in demand in both opera and song, Gilchrist's commanding and emotional performances are elevated through collaboration with renowned collaborative pianist, Tillbrook.

The Wallace Collection

Great friend of Westbourne Music, and stalwart of the Scottish music scene, John Wallace brings the Wallace Collection to Westbourne. This world renowned brass ensemble perform a programme of old favourites and hidden gems. Sure to be a popular concert, booking early is recommended.

ROSS MONTGOMERY TRIO

Former clarinettist with Southbank Sinfonia and member of Atheneum Winds, Ross is no stranger to Westbourne Music. He returns with Antonio Oyarzabal (piano) and Mark Bailey (cello) to perform a programme of Louise Farrenc's charming Trio in E-flat Major, Faure Piano Trio, and Brahms Clarinet Trio op.114.

EDINBURGH QUARTET

The Edinburgh Quartet are one of the foremost string groups in the UK today, regularly performing across the BBC and with an extensive recording catalogue. Much like Westbourne, the Edinburgh Quartet has a passion for nurturing young musical talent and are ensemble in residence for both Stirling and Edinburgh Universities. They will be performing Haydn, Debussy, and Aileen Sweeney's Ceilidh.

PAUL LIVINGSTON (viola) &

ANNA RASTOPCHINA (piano)

Celebrating the rich sonority of an oft overlooked instrument, Paul and Anna will be performing works by Schumann and Hindemith among others. Paul is a hugely sought after orchestral player, leading the viola section of the Berliner Symphoniker, as well as the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

MARK O'KEEFE (trumpet) & SASHA SAVALONI (guitar)

Mark has been principal trumpet of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra since 1996, taking solos with them regularly over the years. He is in demand as soloist, teacher, and chamber musician. Sasha is the winner of the prestigious Sevilla International Guitar Competition. An international soloist and chamber musician, he is currently completing a Doctorate of Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

RYAN CORBETT (accordion)

In our 'one to watch' category, Ryan Corbett is already making waves as an exciting young force in the classical music scene. He has given solo performances at Berlin Philharmonie with whom he has recorded Bach's fourth keyboard concerto. His programme for Westbourne contains music by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Scarlatti, and Mendelssohn among others.
