WELCOME TO WESTBOURNE MUSIC – WEDNESDAYS AT ONE

5th September 2018

MAYA IWABUCHI (violin) and SUSAN TOMES (piano)

We are delighted to be opening our season this year with two world class musicians in recital. Maya Iwabuchi is the Leader of the RSNO and her distinguished career needs no introduction. Susan Tomes is a classical pianist of outstanding quality with over 50 recordings to her name as well as a distinguished career as a writer and journalist.

TURQUOISE DUO (oboe and piano)

Turquoise Duo will present a varied repertoire including arrangements and original pieces. A journey along different countries and composers such as Schumann, Albeniz and Poulenc. Clara Lafuente Garcia plays oboe and Daniel Hart plays piano.

3rd October 2018

DANIEL PETRICA CIOBANU (piano)

Young pianist Daniel Ciobanu will perform a programme full of fireworks including Enescu‘s Carillon Nocturne, Mussorgsky‘s Pictures at an Exhibition, Scriabin Preludes and Stravinsky‘s Firebird. A concert not to be missed.

RCS OPERA SHOWCASE

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland returns to showcase their young singers in a concert that proved a hit last season.

GENOVIA QUARTET (bassoons)

Back due to popular demand the bassoon ensemble returns to Westbourne after a summer international tour. Expect a little bit of everything, from classical favourites to jazz and folk-inspired repertoire.

JAMES WILLSHIRE (piano)

The 2018 Debussy cycle is completed in November in two concerts. The first features his ‘Forgotten Images‘ of 1894 - that were first published in 1977 - and his ever popular Suite Bergamasque and Children‘s Corner.

JAMES WILLSHIRE (piano)
The finale of the Debussy cycle features the second book of Preludes, written in 1913. Do join us to complete this epic journey and show appreciation to James for this incredible achievement.

THE ALL SORTS (a cappella singers)

When The All Sorts formed in late 2017, they set out to combine their classical training with a mutual love for musical variety. From opera to Motown and Lieder to Disney, there’s almost nothing they don’t enjoy singing. This December, The All Sorts will fill Merchants House with a fantastic selection of music, including some original arrangements of classical favourites. What better way to get into the festive Christmas spirit!

WINNER OF THE SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

As part of the first prize for the Scottish International Piano Competiton Can Çakmur will open our concerts in 2019.

THE DOHNÁNYI STRING TRIO

This Glasgow based string trio features Cillian Ó'Breacháin on violin, Campbell Parker on viola and Elias Rooney on cello. The trio will play Mozart Divertimento in E-Flat Major, Strauss Variations on a Bavarian Folk Song and Sibelius String Trio in G Minor.

WALTON SITWELL FACADES
In this unique concert the Walton Sitwell Facades will be performed by international actress Alice St Clair, as seen in the BBC‘s ‘The Crimson Field‘ and conductor Maximilian Fane with an instrumental ensemble. These rarely performed pieces are humourous and brilliant and were recently showcased by Sir Simon Rattle and Barbara Hannigan in Berlin.

ANUSH HOVHANNISYAN (soprano) & JONATHAN SANTAGADA (piano)

Soprano superstar Anush Hovhannisyan returns to Westbourne with international conductor Jonathan Santagada at the piano. Jonathan is conducting Tosca with Opera North in the 2018/19 season.

3rd April 2019

DOMINIC BARBERI (bass)

Having left Glasgow to sing with Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin, Dominic returns to showcase his work at the Merchant's Hall. Dominic was recently in the finals

of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.

SIROCCO WINDS

Sirocco Winds are a dynamic and professional wind ensemble comprised of Masters graduates of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Although based in Glasgow, its members come from all over the UK. They work as both a wind quintet and a wind trio (flute, clarinet and bassoon), and we look forward to welcoming them to Westbourne.

Coming back to showcase their competition are ‘Ye Cronies‘! Past winners of this RCS prize include recent performer here at Westbourne Anush Hovhannisyan.

EDINBURGH QUARTET (strings)

Our world class resident string quartet returns to Westbourne once again. We are delighted that this quartet calls Westbourne its Glasgow home.

TRESKE ENSEMBLE (strings)

Formed in April 2017, the Treske Ensemble came together at a chamber music course in Yorkshire and have performed at the Llandellio Festival and New Generation Festival. The core of the ensemble is made up of Oliver Baily, Abigail Hammet (violins), Ben Kearsley (viola) and Louis Baily (cello).

MR MCFALL'S CHAMBER

Mr McFall's Chamber play Mendelssohn, Mozart and Piazzolla - three composers who, as well as having been infant prodigies, were widely travelled in their youth, absorbed many different musical traditions and benefitted from cosmopolitan childhoods. Mr McFall's Chamber, with pianist, Graeme McNaught, play Mozart's piano quartet in G minor K. 478, Mendelssohn's piano sextet in D, opus 110 and various works by the Argentine tango composer, Astor Piazzolla, including Adios Nonino, Michelangelo '70 and others. Mr McFall's Chamber is a chamber ensemble famous for the diversity of its repertoire. In 2018 they were named "Best Musicians" at the New Music Scotland music awards.
