WELCOME TO WESTBOURNE MUSIC – WEDNESDAYS AT ONE

SINAE LEE (piano)
South-Korean born, but resident in Scotland, Sinae is a sought after chamber musician, soloist and collaborator. Performing the opening concert of the season, Sinae will play Mozart’s Sonata in D, K.576; Nocturne in C minor, Op.48, No.1 and Barcarolle in F sharp, Op.60 (both by Chopin) and conclude with Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor, Op.111.

GLASGOW GUITAR QUARTET
The Glasgow Guitar Quartet is a young, dynamic guitar ensemble of emerging chamber music artists resident in Glasgow. Ever popular at Westbourne Music, this guitar concert will feature a mixed programme of classical guitar quartets.

JOHN CUSHING (clarinet) with SCOTT MITCHELL (piano)
Ex-principal clarinet with the RSNO (1978- 2014), John Cushing presents his duo recital “The Peacock Clarinet” with acclaimed chamber musician and pianist Scott Mitchell. Comprising works such as Honneger’s Sonatine, the ravishing Sonata for clarinet and piano by Poulenc, the virtuosic Premiere Rhapsodie by Debussy and the evocative From Galloway by James MacMillan.

EDINBURGH QUARTET
Celebrated as one of Britain’s foremost chamber ensembles, Westbourne Music is delighted to welcome back our resident string quartet of the season to perform Nicolson’s Quartet no.3, Quartet no. 4 by Shostakovich and MacMillan’s Memento.

AILEEN SWEENEY (accordion)
Currently a student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Aileen showcases the repertoire and sounds of the classical accordion. Her recital will feature Sonata no2 by A. Kusaykov; L’entretien des Muses by Rameua; Le Grand Tango by Piazzolla and 3 preludes by Gershwin. This eclectic and varied programme also includes a special guest on viola!

FIONA JOICE (mezzo-soprano)
Westbourne Music is delighted to present the Scottish vocalist Fiona Joice to perform a varied recital with works by Bach (Laudamus te); Schubert (various); Britten’s intimate A charm of lullabies culminating with the aria Una voce poco fa from Il Barbiere Di Siviglia by Rossini. Fiona is a young talent very much in demand – we look forward to hearing her perform for her home audience!

EMMA ROCHE (flute)
“A Celebration of Jean Pierre Rampal.” Rampal was the first modern flute superstar and one of the most recorded classical artists of all time. He not only popularised the flute as a solo instrument in the post War period but also revived many eighteenth century pieces that would otherwise have been forgotten. This recital will include some of these Baroque masterpieces alongside staples of the modern repertoire of which he is the dedicatee. Programme to include Telemann, Bach, Poulenc, Faure and Debussy.

RCS VOICES
RCS Voices (conducted by Timothy Dean) presents a seasonal concert showcasing the exceptional voices of emerging young talent. A mixed and varied programme features works by Victoria, Tallis, Poulenc and more contemporary arrangements. This concert is a distinctive celebration of the beauty of unaccompanied voices, in the wonderful setting of the Merchants Hall.

TOMMY SMITH AND BRIAN KELLOCK (jazz sax and piano)
Two of Scotland’s greatest jazz artists team up to bring you a beautiful and imaginative duo. Not surprisingly, the press has applauded them with phrases such as ‘bewitching layers of delicacy’, ‘full flight’, ‘spontaneous invention’ and ‘sheer artistry’. This dynamic duo perform tracks from their three CDs on Spartacus records: Bezique, Symbiosis & Whispering of the Stars which feature the great American & European songbook.

LUKE SINCLAIR (tenor) and GEOFFREY TANTI (piano)
Westbourne Westbourne Music is delighted to present the young (but very in demand) tenor Luke Sinclair. Already a major prize winner (Kammer Schloss Rheinsberg International Singing Competition), Luke will be performing excerpts from some of Mahler's best loved works such as Das Knaben Wunderhorn and Das Lied von der Erde alongside songs by Duparc and further excerpts from 8 Gedichte ‘Letzte Blätter’ by Richard Strauss. This concert promises to be a highlight of the season.

THE MAXWELL QUARTET
Hailed as “brilliantly fresh, unexpected and exhilarating” (The Herald), the Maxwell Quartet is rapidly establishing itself as a dynamic and exciting force in the chamber music world. Formed in 2010, the quartet now performs regularly across the UK and abroad, at venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, and St Martin-in-the-Fields, with tours in Europe and further afield.

MATTHEW McALLISTER (guitar)
Matthew makes a welcome return to Westbourne House to perform a rare concert at home in Scotland. To celebrate the launch of his fourth solo recording Matthew presents a celebration of Scottish & Irish music for Classical Guitar including works by Thomas Moore, Maxwell Davies, Neil Gow and Peter Stewart alongside his own transcriptions of Scottish Lute music.

We are sorry to announce that the Rembrandt Trio can no longer be with us on the 26th of April. We are, however, delighted to welcome three world class musicians to Westbourne, who will perform the same programme of Rachmaninov’s soulful Trio Elegiaque no. 1 partnered with the ever popular Archduke Trio op 97 by Beethoven.

EDINBURGH QUARTET
The Quartet is committed to showcasing the breadth and depth of the exceptional quartet repertoire – as such, the Edinburgh Quartet will perform Tippett’s Quartet No. 2 alongside Haydn’s Quartet Op.77 no.2 in F Major.

PIANO SHOWCASE
The Merchants Hall is home to a piano of exceptional quality which fills the acoustic of the hall beautifully. To showcase the wonderful instrument, exquisite repertoire, and some of the upcoming musical stars of the future, this concert will feature soloists from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland performing extracts from the end of year recital examinations.

Finally, Raucous Rossini will be presenting the Helios Collective with our director Ella Marchment's production of the brand new work 'Il letto', about Puccini. A tale of infidelity, great music, and untimely death. What could be more operatic!
